1-1-1 Doubling Spelling Rule Boom Cards™

The doubling spelling rule is one that always seems to confuse students. The 1-1-1 rule states that if the base word is a 1 syllable word, has 1 vowel and ends in 1 consonant you double the final consonant then add the suffix.

These Boom Cards™ allow students to practice this spelling skill.

Kids will get immediate feedback if they selected the correct spelling or not.
They will get visual cues, red if wrong, green if correct.
As well as an auditory 'ding' if the spelling is correct or a 'womp' if incorrect.
Kids LOVE these cute and interactive Boom Cards.

Have you heard of Boom Cards™ from Boom Learning?  If you have not, you must! Boom Cards™ are a fun and easy way for kids to practice just about any skill. I was so excited when I discovered Boom Cards™ I had to make some! I created these double digit addition and subtraction cards.

Students drag the pails to star fish above to answer the questions.
Students are told right away if their answer is correct or incorrect.
The program uses visuals and sounds to alert students if they are right or wrong, then prompts them to make the corrections.

Did I mention they are no prep! You just send kids the link to the cards on Google Classroom or on any other platform students can access links in.  Using Fast Pins the kids can play without logging into anything.  But if you create an account and accounts for the kids, (go to Boom Learning to find out more information), you can log in and get reports of how the kids did on the cards.

Number Corner Calendar Cards

My district just adopted the Bridges Math curriculum and with it the corresponding calendar piece Number Corner.  It is a very HUGE calendar with so many pieces to go with it that need to be displayed.  So since wall space is always limited in classrooms I put my Number Corner display up before school was over to see how much room I would have.  And after putting it up I realized it needed a little flair.  I'll be honest, plain black and white cards on a calendar just weren't going to cut it.  So, I made my own.

I think I'm going to have to change a little bit of the layout, looking at it in a picture makes me see how crooked I staple. 😄

But I love how the cards for the days of the week and months came out!  And the Number Corner banner gives the wall some much needed color!

All of the cards fit perfectly in the oversized Number Corner calendar.  Each month is seasonal or holiday themed.

There are 2 color choices for each month.  Solid color and rainbow color pattern.

I can't wait to start teaching my students Number Corner in the fall.

Reading Comprehension Questions

If your class is anything like mine it can be a real challenge to get students to answer questions about what they are reading.  They have been trying to learn to read for, well, their whole lives and now they have to not only read the words but now think about and understand what they are reading.  So going beyond who are the characters, what is the setting and what happened, they struggle.

So I created reading comprehension question cards.  These cards help me come up with deeper level questions to help get the conversations started during read aloud, guided reading and just about any other time we are reading.

I wrote these cards to get students to think deeper about what they are reading. The questions go beyond the basic who, what, where questions about character and setting.  The question cards can be used to begin conversations during guided reading or can be turned into a reading response journal prompt.

I always copy everything on card stock for durability so I don't ever have to make them again.  You can get a ream of white card stock at Sam's Club for less than $8!  Just copy and laminate then put on a ring to use during discussions.

I made each set, the first set is all about the characters.  How characters change, Each set included a blank page of cards for you to add and create your own questions that can be specific to the story you are reading in class.

I will be adding more questions as I think of them. If you have any specific questions you would like included please email them to me and I will get them added. courtneyc25@live.com

Adding Suffixes

My students have been having a really difficult time remembering the files for adding suffixes.  They needed more practice on just one type of rule at a time. So these cards will help kids practice the rules as well as practice adding different types of suffixes.

This Task Card bundle includes 6 sets of task cards, 144 task cards in all. Each set is practicing adding suffixes to different base words. Use these task cards to play Scoot or as a literacy center. In each set you will get kid friendly "I can" direction sheet with written and picture instructions and a simple to follow rule poster for those tricky spelling patterns.

Reward Coupons--Growing Bundle FREE updates!

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Reward-Coupons-Growing-Bundle-FREE-updates-3297751
I absolutely love reward coupons.  They have next to no cost for the teachers, unless you are willing to buy some popsicles and give up your quite lunch time. There is also minimal effort for the teacher, printing and cutting, which can be done by some very helpful volunteers if you are so lucky.  Last year I had all of my coupons in a pencil supply envelope, you know the ones, neon pink with a little zipper that never really works.  Well, that turned into a huge mess and kids could never find what they wanted, so it was a fail.

So all summer I have been thinking of an easy way for kids to look at and decide on reward coupons.  And I found these at Wal-Mart;  trading card protective pages.  They were under $4 for a pack of ten pages, 9 pockets on each page, that has the potential for 90 different coupons!  So I bought them, brought them home and got to work!

I made 47 different reward coupons the exact size of a trading card.  The coupons come in full color and grey scale.  I printed one of each in full color on card stock and laminated them.  I put those in the trading card pockets, and put that in my cute polka dot binder.  Behind the one laminated copy I put black and white copies on colored paper.  These are the kids coupons.  The laminated color cards are only for display purposes.  And what is great is that if a kid goes to find a coupon and the colored copies are empty they can give you the laminated one and you will know exactly what to copy to make more.

Another option I thought about is this hanging jewelry organizer.  I bought this last year to use to hold these coupons, but depending on how much wall space you have the binder might be a better option but I do love the look and display of the hanging version.  I got this particular one on clearance at Gordmans.

Here is yet another option.  It is a $3 calendar pocket chart that I got at walmart.  The cards overlap a bit but not so much you can't see what you are looking for.  If it bothers you can you scale down the PDF and print it slightly smaller to fit.

Another thing you can do with any of these options is add point values or money values to each reward. If you are a Class Dojo user or use a version of a class economy you can assign points or dollar amounts to each reward.  You can use a sharpie or a simple sticker and put the value of each coupon

Creative Writing

Sometimes kids get stuck and aren't sure what to write about, and sometimes kids just need a little time to write about something silly and creative and use their imaginations!

Roll and Write a story offers both.  It can be used as an easy center for kids to do on their own or a fun class activity.  My students loved to share their stories with each other and draw pictures to go with their crazy stories.

Included are 6 roll and write story starters
Super Silly Story
Animal Story
Super Hero Story
Fairy Tale Story
Sports Story
Spooky Story

And a blank template so you or the kids can make their own!

Also included are 2 template for the students to keep track of their rolls and write their stories.
